The Beach Cabin's design was inspired by the moderate climate of northern Poland, where it is situated. The cabin features a winter garden, which not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape but also contributes to passive solar energy harvesting. This ecological advantage is achieved through the garden's glazing, improving the energy balance of the building.
What sets this design apart is its simple form that seamlessly integrates into the beach environment. The building offers two spaces: a closed area and a completely glazed winter garden that opens up a panoramic view of the sea and the beach. The contrast between these two components is striking, both during the day and at night when the winter garden's interior is warmly illuminated. The building is elevated on stilts, giving the impression of floating above the sand.
The structure of the winter garden is realized using the SOLARLUX system in a wood-aluminum construction. The applied thermo-insulating glass also serves as sun protection. This construction method ensures the building's durability while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.
The Beach Cabin measures approximately 6 m in width and 18 m in length, with one-third being transparent and two-thirds opaque. In colder periods, the winter garden acts as a large air collector, utilizing the heat generated inside by solar radiation for heating through a heat pump. This efficient use of solar energy further underscores the design's commitment to sustainability.
This design project was completed in 2022 on the Baltic Sea beach near Gdansk. The Beach Cabin's simple form and dual-space concept have been well-received, earning it the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's wisdom and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, Peter Kuczia's Beach Cabin on the Baltic Sea is a shining example of sustainable design in the hospitality sector. Its innovative use of solar energy, unique dual-space concept, and seamless integration into the natural environment make it a worthy recipient of the Golden A' Design Award. This project serves as an inspiration for future designs that aim to merge aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
